Senior Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Specialist 1-Occupational Safety

Duties
Advanced level ES&H point of contact for construction activities. This responsibility includes but is not limited to: performing design reviews, completing pre-bid, pre-qualification assessments of contractors, performing multiple job-site safety inspections on a regular basis, and assisting project managers in application and oversight of contractor safety requirements.

Participate on project teams, providing outstanding safety consultation support.

Conduct hazard assessments and determine appropriate hazard control measures.

Subject matter expert for program development, maintenance, and review for various ES&H programs such as: Personal Protective Equipment, Emergency Response Teams, Confined Space, Lockout/Tagout, Machine Shop Safety, Traffic Safety, and Workplace Inspections.

Provide interpretation and assist with field application of occupational safety standards such as hoisting and rigging, crane safety, fall protection, heavy equipment, excavation, and fire and life safety.

Provide new employee ES&H orientation. Develop and provide other ES&H training to various organizational units. The training may be formal scheduled classes or informal, on-demand training on special topics.

Act as backup for ES&H programs assigned to other ESH&Q Office members. These programs will be assigned based on the needs of the ESH&Q Office and the expertise of the individual.

Conduct accident/incident investigation and root cause analysis as needed. Follow-up on corrective action implementation.

Act as a member of the NREL Emergency Response Team for low- to moderate-spill response. Responsibilities include: participation in drills, classroom training, wearing SCBA, and maintenance of required certifications.

Other safety and health duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
Master's degree in environmental health, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or other relevant discipline or combination of equivalent education, professional certification, and relevant technical or business experience. Ten years of relevant ES&H experience. Advanced technical knowledge of ES&H practices, procedures, and techniques. Demonstrated leadership in one or more areas of team, task, or project responsibilities. Demonstrated ability to independently perform duties. Excellent interpersonal and oral/written communications skills. Proficient computer skills. Ability to perform occasional site work that can involve extreme weather conditions and moderate physical exertion. Ability to travel on occasion.

Preferred
Certified Safety Professional (CSP). Ability to walk one mile continuously, able to stand continuously for two hours, and able to lift and carry forty-five pounds. Project management experience.
